Not too long ago, I thought that I was ticking all the boxes…Steady job…Good income…Decent lifestyle….But under the surface, something felt… off.
The work didn’t light me up. My days were full, but not fulfilling. And I kept asking myself quietly:
“Is this really it?”
I wasn’t in crisis. But I knew deep down that I wasn’t living on purpose.
It was like being on a treadmill…moving forward, but not going anywhere meaningful.
And that’s what eventually led me here — to The Digital Dividend, to building other side income streams, and to helping others explore the same path.
Because here’s what I’ve learned:
Your purpose isn’t a job title or a five-year plan. It’s something you build into your life through action. It’s something that you can do alongside other aspects of your life, such as your family or your interests.
And your side hustle or online business can be one of the clearest, most direct ways to find it.
What “Purpose” Really Means
We often think that purpose has to be dramatic. Like one day, the sky opens and a voice says:
“You were put on Earth to start a coaching business for high-achieving introverts.”
But in reality, purpose usually arrives quietly.
It lives in your interests, struggles, curiosity, and creativity.
And more often than not, it reveals itself when you start building something that matters even if it’s just a small project on the side.
I recently read an article called 7 Ways to Find Your Purpose in Life.
A few points really stuck with me:
- Look for meaningful moments in your past (they leave clues)
- Use your strengths to help other people
- Start small — purpose is found through doing
Reading that article led me down a bit of a rabbit hole searching for other inspiring stories from people who have been on a similar journey. Here are a few stories that really hit home:
🧶 Kirsty, a designer from Manchester, started KBSublimationDesign on Etsy. It began as a creative escape during a tough time. Today, it’s a profitable store built around colour, joy, and self-expression.
🧠 Adeel, a business tech consultant, turned his expertise into D-Tech & Consultancy. He went from employee to entrepreneur by helping small UK businesses digitise and scale.
📱 Leanne, a social media manager in Bristol, used her digital skills to help build e-commerce brands like Shirtbox. Her side hustle managing Instagram accounts became a springboard for career freedom. Leanne on LinkedIn
None of them started out saying “I want to find my life’s purpose.” They just took a step toward something they cared about. And purpose followed.
Use AI to Help You Explore Your Purpose
You don’t need a 3-day retreat or a stack of self-help books to find your own purpose in life.
A few smart questions can help you clarify what you really want.
Here’s some ChatGPT prompts to get you started:
🧠 Prompt 1 – Clarify your core interests:
“Can you ask me 10 questions to help uncover what I’m truly passionate about, especially in the context of starting an online business?”
🧠 Prompt 2 – Look to your past for clues:
“Help me reflect on my past jobs, hobbies, and experiences. What patterns suggest what I’m meant to be doing?”
🧠 Prompt 3 – Identify your ‘struggles to strengths’ story:
“What problems have I overcome that I could now help others with, through content, services, or products?”
🧠 Prompt 4 – Draft your purpose statement:
“Based on my answers, can you write a one-sentence personal purpose statement tied to helping others and building an online business?”
These aren’t just introspective journaling exercises. They can literally shape your first product, service, or content niche.
Once you’ve identified a busness idea, you can use chatGPT to help you to create a simple business plan.
Why Side Hustles Help You Find Purpose
Here’s the thing: Your side hustle won’t always just make you money. It might show you who you are.
As you start:
- You’ll figure out what excites you (and what drains you)
- You’ll gain confidence by solving real problems for people
- You’ll discover new skills, passions, and paths you didn’t even know existed
Most importantly, you’ll shift from wondering “What if?” to saying “What’s next?”
It’s not about nailing your purpose on Day One.
It’s about giving yourself permission to explore.
Final Thought
You don’t find your purpose by thinking. You find it by doing.
By starting small.
By solving a problem.
By helping someone.
By creating something you’re proud of.
So if you’ve been sitting on an idea, this is your sign to take it seriously.
Not just for the money.
Not just for the freedom.
But because your purpose might be hiding inside it.
